Oasi Cactus: Not Just Cacti

OOasi Cactus, a long-standing Sicilian exhibitor specializing in cacti and succulents, is based in Giarratana, in the heart of the Hyblaean Mountains. This farm also produces one of the region’s most famous products: the Giarratana Onion, a Slow Food Presidium.

It’s a truly unique onion: its bulbs can grow to exceptional sizes, with white flesh that’s sweet and has very little pungency. This makes it excellent not only cooked or roasted, as Sicilian tradition calls for, but also eaten raw.

For the 2026 Festa del Cactus, Oasi Cactus has offered to take orders and bring the pre-ordered Giarratana onions to Bologna—along with, of course, its cacti and succulents.

An unexpected culinary extra from Sicily that we find very hard to resist.
