The Leo Giammanco’s farm is located in Sicily, between Modica and Noto. Among the Italian realities of the sector, it is the one that enjoys the best possible climatic conditions, in terms of mild, bright winters and dry summers.
Although Leo’s nursery is open for visits by appointment, for a long time the sales activity has been focused on the increasingly widespread public events in Italy: from the Landriana estate to the Auditorium in Rome, the Botanical Garden in Portici, Salerno, etc. Inevitable is its presence at events organized by the Cactus&Co. Association.
In his cold greenhouse (growing cacti in the province of Ragusa requires no heating!) Leo has a wide selection of succulents of all kinds, although he personally prefers growing the more interesting African mesembryanthemums and succulents, such as crassulas, apocynaceae and asclepiadaceae.
Like so many others, Leo is a nurseryman who has a glorious history as a collector and has been able to turn a passion into a job that is truly ‘tailored’ to his own aspirations. Despite this, he is not completely cured; in fact, it is not uncommon for him to struggle to break away from a particularly interesting ‘piece’.
But the collector’s passion does not only shine through in these signs of ‘weakness’: Leo produces a large number of plants himself, using certified and properly graded material, and treats each specimen with great care, limiting the excessive use of fertilizers, pesticides and unsuitable substrates.
If you ask him who supports him in all this work, he will tell you that his best helpers include Monteverdi, Bach, Beethoven, and sometimes some old acquaintances from Jazz and Rock!
