Since several years I have been fond of tillandsias, and the difficulties in raising them have not diminished from the beginning. My commitment is to spread these wonders to all gardens and share with people the satisfaction of cultivating these objects of wonder. I think growing a plant that hangs by a thread, surprising you with each new season can only amaze you.
My first productions were seedlings applied to natural supports, beautiful arrangements created to appeal to customers’ taste, but I was not satisfied: the plants were in the background, and customers asked me for supports that matched their furniture, with the colors that best matched those in their homes. This was not what I wanted; my job was not to make knick-knacks.
It was necessary to change.
One day I went to California to visit my son. about two hundred miles from where he lives, there was a tillandsia nursery (between botanical varieties and cultivars they had about 400). Coming to this place a new world opened up to me, I really saw what tillandsias are. That day I stole with my eye all I could steal and returned home with a heart swollen with joy.
Having obtained import permits, I began to purchase the first species from abroad, the ones I could not find in Italy, and since then I began to study them, fine-tuning my cultivation method.
A few years ago I started selling my own production. My customers throughout Italy have found that my plants have no growing problems and flower easily. When I return to exhibitions, everyone comes by to see me and, often, sends me messages for advice or to solve problems.
My collection has over 160 species. Of these, eight reproduce in my facilities in sufficient quantity to meet demand. What gives me the most satisfaction is passing on my passion to those I meet at the events I attend, especially if they have not had a good experience with these wonders of nature in the past.
